Abstract

This research examines the perception of Malaysians on business ethics in corporate governance. Malaysia being a progressive multiracial country, with a workforce that may have varying degrees of unethical perception which may be caused by gender, age, academic qualifications, ethnicity as well as their work environment which may have an effect and determine their frame of mind.

The research will examine the relationship of each of those factors with regards to their perception of unethical behaviour. The 1MBD global financial scandal can be seen as a wake up call for many Malaysians involve in business as what is perceived as unethical and how damaging these actions can be for the country. With the past and current issues of major unethical behaviour involving billions of ringgit as a backdrop, this research will attempt to study the relationship of gender, age , ethnicity, frame of mind and their respective perception of unethical behaviour .

The findings of the research indicated that an overwhelming majority of Malaysians, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, academic qualification, sector and experience, are very clear on what conduct is deem as unethical, are against any form unethical conduct, acknowledge that it is wrong and perceived that such unethical conduct is on the rise in Malaysia. Further analysis on their frame of mind indicated that a majority of the respondents would follow instructions if it is ethical and consequently, would not engage in unethical even if instructed to do so.

This research findings is crucial in understanding that a majority of Malaysian are against illegal and unethical conduct although some are forced to do so as the working culture dictates them to act as such, at no choice of their own.
